FAQ: The End of the Light Bulb as We Know It - US News and World Report

When the incandescent light bulbs become illegal in 2012, are we expected to us the eco-friendly (so-called) mercury based bulbs in our refrigerators and freezers? We may as well go back to lead based paint and leaded gasoline; cheap cigarettes and public smoking; asbestos in kitchen hot pads, brake linings, and construction materials; mercury in tooth fillings and lipstick; and name your own poison. These new bulbs in cold conditions will be slow to come on and their light output will be diminished.
